This year I was planning on going to Northern Norway and making my way to Germany.  At work, my boss was leaving our group and I decided to wait until the new boss took over to purchase my trip flights.  Well the COVID-19 Pandemic started before I bought plane tickets and travel was being restricted.  Therefor I decided not to get the plane ticket and request vacation time.  As time passed, I realized I needed to use up some vacation or loose it.  I decided instead of flying somewhere I would take a long drive trip, cycle in state I have not cycled in before and cycled 100 KM (62 Miles) in these new states. I ended up driving about 4420 miles through Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah and then back to my home in Portland, Oregon (See map below).  I rarely drive my 2000 Lexus RX300, the car worked great.  Overall, it was too much driving for me.  I hoped that I would be able to fly somewhere the next year.

Portland Oregon to Washington State

Thursday, June 18, 2020
I started work at 5:30 AM and finished work at 2:00 PM. We loaded Marty’s car and left Portland at around 3:30 PM. We drove all the way to Emerald Valley Inn near Crescent Lake in Port Angeles, Washington. Their check in time ends at 9:00 PM, I had already arrange for after hour check-in so we were all set. It turned out that we arrived a couple minutes before 9:00 PM. Since we had already arrange late check in all we had to do is enter the room and the door was unlocked with the keys on the table. Then we sent them a text telling them we had arrived. The hotel was on a nice piece of land and we did a short walk before settling down for the night. The TV and internet did not work. We ended up going to sleep around 11:00 PM.

My brother Dave told me he would show up at our hotel between 8:30 AM and 8:45 AM. Therefore, I said I would expect him around 8:37 AM and he showed up at our hotel at exactly 8:37 AM. Then we went to the McDonalds in Port Angeles for a takeout breakfast. Next, we looked for the trail parking lot and there we found that people sleeping in their cars at the isolated parking lot. I suggested that we parked near the school, so we did. Then we (Natalie, Caleigh, Ellen, Marty, Dave and me) cycled the Olympic Discovery trial to Sequim and back to our cars. It was a great fun family ride; we had lunch in the town of Sequim. Then we drove to Dave and Ellen’s lake house on Mason Lake. We stayed there for the night.

We had breakfast with my brother and his family. Then we started heading home around 9:00 AM. On the way home, we stopped at William A. Bush Park in Lacy Washington. We unloaded our bikes and cycled to Woodard Bay. Once at the bay we locked our bikes and hiked to the historic bay area. We spent a little time there and then hiked back to our bikes. Then we biked back towards the car. Once near the car I talked Marty into cycle to the new tunnel under the tracks and then back to the car. Last time I went to the new part of the trail there was no tunnel and just some big beams. It was interesting how they were able to put the tunnel under the railroad tracks and keep the train running. The new tunnel was support by very large solid steel I-beams. We did the extra miles because I wanted the extra miles so we could say we cycled 100 KM while in Washington State. Then we drove back home and I packed my car for my road trip that would start the next day. We went to sleep at around 11:00 PM.

Idaho Part 1

Sunday, June 21, 2020
I woke up around 6:00 AM, finished packing my car and started my road trip by 7:00 AM. I drove hard to Idaho. While going through Spokane I kept seeing signs stating a silver alert (I checked to see what it was about when home and found, “ A Silver Alert has been issued for a missing 63-year-old man who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that results in memory issues similar to dementia”, Pierce County sheriff’s deputies said. - Paul Whittingslow”). I had not seen a silver alert before and I saw several highway lighted signs with the alert with vehicle description and license plate. I continued into Idaho and stopped at Huetter Rest Area. I saw a bike trail from the rest stopped and left my car parked there and cycled into Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Before leaving my car, I marked the location using my GPS. I cycled into town and on trial near the lake. There were several people on the lake waterfront, hardly anyone was wearing a COVID-19 protection mask and social distancing did not seem to be of concern to the people near the lake. I had on my mask, I saw one lady with a mask partially covering her face (over her mouth, but her nose was not covered) and 2 people with bikes wearing masks. Those were the only three people I saw wearing mask, I saw hundreds of people walking around without mask. I guess there is no concern of getting COVCID-19 at Coeur d'Alene. I think they should be concerned! After checking out town, I worked my way back to my car. I thought I was following the highway frontage road back towards my car, I noticed from my GPS that the car was up the hill and I saw no roads between me and the actual highway up the hill. Then I turned back towards town to get a road that lead to the trail to my car, no road towards the highway from where I was. I went back and quickly found my car with the aid of my GPS. Then I started driving towards Montana, I saw a moose cross the highway in Idaho. I drove most of the way through Montana before stopping at a rest stop where I slept for the night. I left my bike in my car, it was not very comfortable in the car. I did not sleep great. I went to sleep around 11:00 PM.

North Dakota

Monday, June 22, 2020
I woke up before 6:00 AM, after an uncomfortable sleep and left the rest stop. Then I drove to the town of Medora, North Dakota. This is the town where you access Theodore Roosevelt National Park. I decided to save on the entry fee and park my car in the town and cycle into the park. The park visitor center was closed and to pay you had to ask a female park ranger at a table outside the visitor center building. She asked if I was biking a long ways and told me about the park. I told her I had biked from town and she mentioned people cycling cross country often stopped at Theodore Roosevelt National Park. She told me how the road was closed at mile 11 due to a covert repair (I already knew that, I had read it on-line) and she said I could go a little past the closed road sign. The fee was $15.00 to cycle in the park and it would have been $30.00 to take my car. To pay the ranger handed me an envelope and said I had to pay with the exact change and put the payment with envelop filled out into a post nearby. It would have been easy to enter the park without paying. At this point in life I have the money to pay and always pay entry fees now (when I was poor and young I probably would not have paid the entry fee). The first 11 miles was a nice road with a couple small dead end roads, along the road I saw several prairie dogs and buffalo. When I arrived at mile 11 where the road was closed, I went under the blockade and cycled for about a mile. It seemed like I could keep going, but I thought the information from the entry ranger might be wrong. No one was on that part of the road and it was definitely closed. Also, it was easy for people from the open road to see me in the closed area. I did not want to get in trouble, so I headed back before I reached the obviously impassible covert. When I was younger I probably would have kept going until I was told to turn back. I cycled back to the park entrance and a little around the town of Medora .

Then I drove to Bismarck, North Dakota.  I found a good bike trail to the University of Mary and back to town. I had trouble finding a place that looked safe and legal to park my car, I found a park near a river not far from the University, parked and cycled from there. I biked to the University, then to the Bismarck city area and tried to find a good place to stay. I did not find anything that seemed COVID-19 safe to me, so I drove most of the way to Fargo. A town, Jamestown slightly west of Fargo, seemed like a safe place, so I found a COVID-19 safe looking hotel. At the nice hotel, the hotel office employees did not have masks, I asked them about COVID-19 precautions, and they said it was not a problem there (hmm!).  That night I did not sleep great, I even took 1.5 sleeping pills; I think I was concerned about COVID-19. I was thinking back to the Lewis and Clark stuff I had seen near Bismarck and started wishing I would have gone south, I was getting tired of driving. I went to sleep around midnight that night.

I woke up around 6:30 AM and cycled 20 miles on the highway near the hotel. Then I packed up, left the hotel about 8:30 AM, went to Walmart for groceries and bought breakfast at McDonalds. I was getting frustrated with all the driving and not seeing anything. I felt I wanted to follow the Lewis and Clark route, so I rerouted my journey to see Mt. Rushmore (This would allow me to follow the Lewis and Clark route south of Bismarck).

I first had to drive all the way back to Bismarck (about 100 miles west) and then I went south on highway 6 to highway 21 to highway 31, highway 12 and then to highway 65 where there was a sign suggesting to consider another route due to a COVID-19 checkpoint. I figured I was just passing through and I should be able to make it through the checkpoint. Well about 31.3 miles past the sign that said COVID-19 Checkpoint ahead, they said I could not continue through the reservation. They routed me back the 31.3 miles to highway 12 and then 30 more miles west to get to back on route to Mt. Rushmore (31.3 miles GPS miles from intersection of Highway 12/ highway 65 and where I turned me back due to COVID-19). I kept telling myself I was on a bike trip and that I have already been to Mt. Rushmore. When I got back to the original COVID-19 sign (intersection of highway 12 and highway 65), I decided to go back to my original plan and skip Mt. Rushmore. Also I either traveled on the wrong side of the Missouri River or there were no signs indicating historic fact about the Lewis and Clank adventure (so not a scenic route like I was hoping). Therefore, I continued east, if I would have gone towards Fargo at the beginning of the day I would have reduced my driving miles by about 300 miles. What a waste of time!

Minnesota

Then I drove towards Lake Benton, Minnesota. I saw several long loaded trucks carrying wind meal parts, lots of wind generation in this part of the country. When I arrived at the on ramp to interstate 29, I was stopped to wait for three of these long loads truck to enter the freeway. They each carried one fin for a windmill. The first two trukcs took a coupe minutes to make the corner onto the freeway ramp, it looked like they only had a couple of inches to spare between the on-ramp and the on-ramp sign. The third truck was off be a small amount and had to go back and forth for about 20 minutes before it could make the turn. It seemed like a long wait to get onto interstate 29. Once at Lake Benton I cycled mostly on the highway and a little in the small town.  Not much to see and not very good roads near Benton lake for cycling (No sholders, but good pavement).

I woke up around 6:00 AM and cycle to trails, I had seen on my bike the previous day in Luverne . I cycled by the school and then back to the hotel by around 7:15 AM. The forecast was predicting heavy rains in the evening, but a nice day. I wanted to make sure to complete all of my desired 100 KM of cycling in Iowa before the rain started. I pushed all day, made my miles and the weather stayed sunny all day. That evening it did not rain, I guess the prediction was wrong.

Then I drove to Le Mar, “The Ice Cream Capital of the World”. Painted life-sized ice cream cones where found in front of several businesses. There were also some great bike paths around town. After completed my 100 KM for Iowa I continued to a town, Missouri Valley, close to Nebraska and found a hotel for the night. I was eating a tuna sandwich and one of my gold crowns fell out. It had only been in there for about a year. When I returned to Portland, they wanted to change me to put it back in, I complained and they agreed there would be no charge, since they had put it in less than a year prior to it falling out.

In the morning I left the hotel and had breakfast at Burger King instead of McDonalds, it was right next to my hotel. The employees at Bu rger King were not as well protected against COVID-19 as McDonalds. There was no shield between the drive up window and the employee and they were not wearing rubber gloves. For the rest of my trip I always went to McDonalds for breakfast. Then I drove to Fremont, Nebraska and parked at the Walmart. From there I found great cycling trails to lakes and parks. It turns out one of our interns at DTNA was from Fremont (she sent me a note on Facebook telling me it was her hometown).

Then I drove to Columbus and was planning to not stop, I saw a river front bike trail, so I parked and started biking. The trail was very short, I biked to the main part of town (Columbus), not great for riding.  I found one road that was OK, so I cycled for a ways on that and then cycled back to my car.

Then I drove to Elm Creek and parked at the General Dollar.  From there I, biked 20 miles ended out back in Elm Creek. At one point, I saw two trains simultaneously running in parallel and one going the opposite direction.  I went to check out the tracks and found there were three parallel train tracks in that area. There were about six trains/ hour running past me while I did my short highway ride. From Elm Creek I completed my 100 KM of cycling in Nebraska, so I started driving towards Wyoming. I wanted to spend a night in Nebraska, so I stayed about 60 miles from the boarder of Wyoming in the town of Sydney, Nebraska. On my way to Sydney, I noticed the gas was low in my car and the low fuel light went on for the first time on this trip. I was not thinking about my gas and almost did not notice the light was on. I found a gas station quickly and filled the tank. For a short time, that night there was thunderstorms, but not much rain. That was my first rain on this trip. I think I went under the storm before the heavy rain started. Once at a hotel I used the toilet. It took about four flushes to get everything down. In the morning, I told the hotel clerk (young woman) the toilet did not work and she said it had something to do with the type of toilet. The hotel clerk did not seem concerned about anything. It was a Quality Inn and seemed nice. Overall, it was a very comfortable and good place to stay.

Saturday, June 27, 2020
In the morning when I checked out of the hotel, I complained about the toilet and they did not care. Normally they offer me a receipt, but not at this hotel. I took the sack breakfast with me ( orange, small water and a blueberry muffin). I picked up some additional breakfast at McDonalds and then drove to Cheyenne, Wyoming. A little before I arrived in Cheyenne, I found a Walmart (580 Livingston Ave, Cheyenne, WY 82007) to park my car and I started cycling from there. I quickly found a bike trail that lead into town, I was in downtown Cheyenne within a few mile bike ride from Walmart. I checked out the train Depoe area, the town theme was painted people sized cowboy boots. I checked out the outside of the capital and surrounding buildings. I then cycled the main street, which had a bike lane to Lions Park. Next to Lions park was the old Frontier town, due to CIVID-19 this was a deserted tourist attraction (On a normal year there are probably hundreds of people there). From there I found bike trails to the high school and then the public Baseball parks. Then I cycled the trails back to the Walmart. I could have used my GPS and found a shorter route back to the Walmart, but I wanted the extra miles.

Once in Rock Springs I got a hotel and went for a 15 mile ride on the highways before going to sleep. The theme in Rock Springs is painted plywood Bulls on wheels. I went to sleep around midnight that night.

I cycled from near the intersection of I-80 and I-84 to exit 178 of I-84 on Echo Canyon road near Echo, Utah. It was a very scenic ride with colorful sandstone and you could see rock climbers near the road. At the beginning of the road, there was a place for people to target practice with guns and rifles. The people shot their guns into the hillside in the opposite direction of the highway, it seemed awfully close to interstate 84. After cycling the canyon, I cycled part of the dirt trail near Echo Dam Road and then back to my car. It was lightly raining on and off during these rides, this was my first rain day of this trip.

I then drove to Ogden and found a Walmart to park my car. Then I cycled from there and quickly found the centennial bike trail into the city (I lucked into it, I did not know it was there. I was crossing a bridge on a busy road and saw it when I looked down towards the river). I followed the centennial and river parkway bike trails to the end (near the Dinosaur park), when I was retuning I noticed sign that showed that slightly passed the dinosaur park was Ogden Canyon Waterfall. I should have looked at the signs sooner. It was a little rain while I was cycling, but overall it was a great bike trial riding day. I then went back to my car and drove towards Tremonton. I looked for a hotel but did not see one I trusted, so I decided to head north. I wanted to stay in Utah for a night (when I returned to Portland I had stayed for at least one night in each state I visited). It did not look like there were any more towns to the north and it was raining so hard that I could not see when I needed to pass a truck. I had only gone one exit, so I took the next exit and then returned to the town of Tremonton. Once back in Tremonton I used my GPS and found a Motel 6, not far from where I looked for a hotel earlier (about another mile down the road). The Motel 6 had separate door entries so I felt it was COVID-19 safer than the other hotels and got a room for the night. I went to sleep around midnight.

Idaho Part 2

Monday, June 29, 2020
In the morning, I packed up and drove to Twin Falls, Idaho. I first drove my car and checked out Shoshone Falls. The falls were very cool and there was a trail to Evel Knievel Snake River Canyon Jump Site. I thought I could drive there but could not find it. I checked out Dierkes Lake and saw a marmot in the rocks, very scenic, small lake. I then drove and parked by the goodwill. I cycle to look for the Evel Knievel ramp, but found I should have hiked from the falls, oh well I missed that attraction. I cycled the highways for a while and the Rock Creek Trail. I also cycled Twin Fall parkway trail and then back to my car.

Next I drove to Boise and found a room at the Airport Inn.  I was biking by about 5:30 PM and cycled to the Capital and then I cycled the green-belt to about miles 6.2 past the golf course towards the SE ( https://www.cityofboise.org/media/6659/2022-greenbelt-map.pdf ). The trail was great, this time I did not have time to cycle the west (I have done the trail several years back). I wanted to complete my 100 KM of cycling before the end of the day so I could get home for Marty’s birthday (it was the next day). I then biked back to my hotel and went to sleep around 11:00 PM.

I took off from my Boise Hotel around 7:00 AM, bought breakfast at McDonalds and started the long drive home. I called the dentist to setup an appointment to get my gold crown reattached and I was able to set up an appointment for July 2 nd at 11:00 AM (I could have gotten a sooner appointment, but wanted to bike 100 KM in Oregon on July 1 st). My car had been running great for the entire trip, now that I was on my last day the ABS lamp turned on at 9:10 AM near I-84 milepost 323 in Oregon. I stopped at the next stop area and used my OBD_II tool to check for diagnostic codes. I did not have any codes and the lamp turned off on its own with a key cycle. Then I started driving again and the lamp came on again. I stopped at the next exit, that time I did not cycle the ignition first and checked for diagnostic code. Still no codes and the lamp was staying on, so I cleared codes anyways and the ABS lamp turned off for the remainder of my trip. I guess no diagnostic code, no problem. Overall, the car worked perfect for the entire trip, before leaving I had my oil changed and the car had a very slight oil leak after the oil change (no leak before). I bought extra oil to take on my trip, but never needed it. The oil stayed at the full line for the entire trip and the leak went away on the first day of travel. Maybe the oil leak was just a spill that dripped for a couple of days before I departed on my trip. I was getting sleepy so I went to a gas station store next to highway in Pendleton for coffee and the store had a sign-indicating mask required for COVID-19. The woman behind the counter was not wearing a mask and she told her customer (a friend of hers) that he did not need to have his mask on (So he took off his mask). They were young and probably would not get sick from COVID-19, but I feel they should comply with the store requirements as an act of kindness for older people like myself. I got back to Portland at about 4:00 PM and celebrated Marty’s birthday with her. I hurried home so I could make it back for her birthday. I bought her a pizza birthday dinner, beef Jerky, cupcakes and donated to her travel funds. I think the best thing for her was that I made it home in time to celebrate her birthday. We had dinner, watched TV and went to sleep around 11:00 PM.

I woke up around 7:00 AM and cycled to Boring, Oregon.  Then to Blue Lake, then along Marine drive to Bybee Lake and then back home.  I wanted to cycle 100 KM in Oregon to go with the rest of my trip.

I went to the dentist to get my gold crown reattached and biked around Portland slew. Then I went home and got ready for our July 4th weekend at Mason Lake with my brother and his family. We did not start loading the car up yet, I was still tired from my road trip and we went to sleep around 11:30 PM.

We left for Mason Lake around 11:00 AM and stopped to cycle part of the Yelm-Tenino bike trail. Marty and I cycle the rails to trails from Tenino, Washington to Rainier, Washington.  Then we drove the rest of the way to Dave and Ellen's lake house at Mason Lake.  We ate a big meal and watched the fireworks.  Dave’s friend Steve and his girlfriend Frankie from Dallas, Texas drove up.  Also Tracy’s son (Ellen’s friend) Mathew was there at Dave’s Lake house.  Steve's daughter and her fiancé also showed up, they had just moved to Eugene Oregon from Dallas, Texas.  Steve’s daughter had just landed a great job in Eugene. It was a large group to me and I got a little annoyed with the handshake and lack of social distancing.  We were doing a little social distancing, but not great and it was only the 10 of us together all weekend. I think prior to the gathering Marty and I were very cautious about COVID-19 precautions. I did get used to the social July 4 th party, but felt I probably should not do it again until COVID-19 becomes less of an issue.  At first, I wanted to go back to Portland in the morning, but then decided to stay through until July 5th. The fireworks on the Lake were great as usual. There were several boats on the water going to check out the fireworks. We stayed up playing cards and darts until about midnight.

We woke up a little after 8:00 AM. We hung out most of the day eating and playing cards. We went out on the boat a couple of times. Then second time on the boat we joined the July 4 th boat parade. The only biking I did was the hydro bike for about an hour. That night we watched lake home owner’s private fireworks from my brother’s boat dock.  We also had a fire and had s’mores.

We woke up a little after 8:00 AM. Then we had breakfast and hung out a little. Then we cycled around the lake and left the lake house around 2:00 PM.  There was a big crash on I-5 so we had to drive through Longview, Washington to highway 30 to get home.  We got home around 6:00 PM and went for a neighborhood walk.  We went to sleep around 11:00 PM.
