I decided to take a second drive trip, since I still could not comfortable fly due to COVID-19. I wanted to cycle 100 KM (62 Miles) in Nevada. We ended up driving about 2000 miles through Oregon, Nevada, California and then back to my home in Portland, Oregon (See map below).  At the beginning of the trip and then majority of the last day of our trip I forgot to turn on my GPS, thus I did not record our entire trip (in the map below the green lines were put on the map to represent my memory of what was not recorded, it should be very close to correct)

Portland Oregon to McDermitt, Nevada

We had the car all packed at about 2:45 PM, but could not find Marty’s bike rack bar. She has a lady’s bike and the bike cannot be put on the bike rack without a special bar. We unloaded the car looking for the bar, then we found it right in front of our eyes on the table in my backyard patio. We both should have seen it. That would have saved us from unloaded and reload the car. We still were able to leave Portland by about 3:00 PM (only a short delay looking for the bar). We expected to be delayed by the White River Canyon fire, but it went mostly unnoticed and did not affect our drive. On the way down highway 97 we stopped at Peter Skene Ogden State Scenic Viewpoint and walked over the 1926 version of the Crooked River Bridge and then back over the bridge to Marty’s car. We continued driving and stopped for fast food in Bend. We arrived at our hotel in Hines at about 10:00 PM.

We woke up around 6:30 AM, got breakfast at McDonalds and then started driving towards the Steen Mountains. On the way, we checked out Malheur wildlife refuge. We saw a white pelicans and great blue heron at the pond near the visitor center (near Malheur Lake). Then we drove Center Patrol Road were we saw several Pheasants and a coyote chase a pheasant. We hiked to Buena Vista, we did the 0.5 mile round trip hike, to skip the hike we could have driven the 1.5 mile round trip road. Then we took highway 205 to Frenchglen and when we checked the oil in Marty’s car. We found Marty was low on motor oil. We bought oil and gas and then headed on to the Steen Mountain loop road. When we found Fish Lake, we got a campsite and setup our tent. Then we drove and checked out Kiger Gorge lookout and East rim lookout. Then we hiked to the radio tower summit with a view of Wildhorse Lake. At the summit’s tower there were several propane tanks and I could smell the fuel, seemed like it would be dangerous to light a flame there! Then we drove back to camp and hiked around Fish Lake. I saw a deer from camp and got a great photo of it. Marty relaxed in the tent, I went back to the lake at sunset, and then went back to the tent. We went to sleep around 8:30 PM. It was a warm day, that night by about 1:00 AM I was very could and had to get more coverings.

We woke up around 6:10 AM and left camp at about 7:00 AM. We drove to the East rim lookout again and then finished the loop. The road was very washboard rough. We stopped at Big Indian gorge and checked it out. Then we took a rim hike on the canyon next to Big Indian gorge. We continued and stopped at little Blitzen crossing, not that exciting and campers. Then we finished the loop and drove back to Frenchglen for snacks. Then we drove to find Diamond Craters, well we went on Lava Bed Road and did not see the place to turn, the GPS told us to turn when there was no road. We expected to see a sign, but saw none. Then we got the Round barn and stopped at the visitor center. The lady in the store told us we missed the crater, she said it was exactly 8 miles back and was worth seeing. We checked out the round barn, there was a big live owl in the bran. Then we went back exactly 8 miles and found a not so great road, we had passed a spot that sounded more like the road the lady from the round barn visitor center explained. The road we went on was short and we hike a short ways to find nothing of interest. We then went back to the highway and to the other road we had seen about a mile closer to the round barn. We drove that dirt road for a while and found a few neat craters. We ended up taking a 4WD road a short ways up a hill. Marty was nervous about driving on the road, it was an easy 4WD road. We had lunch by a big tree on the hill. I ended up driving Marty’s’ car back to the main dirt road. Then we drove to McDermitt and found a motel, there are only two motels to choose from in McDermitt. I had looked up the motels on Orbitz and they cost over $100/ night to reserve a room using Orbitz. Since we did not have reservation and the motel was mostly empty, it only cost $60/ night. I could not find my spare GPS batteries anywhere, so I bought more batteries at the store in McDermitt. That evening I found my batteries in my wet bathroom stuff bag. We went to sleep around 10:00 PM.

I woke up around 5:10 AM and loaded the car and got my bike ready to cycle to Winnemucca, Nevada. I left the motel in McDermitt, Nevada slightly before 6:00 AM. I was in my shorts and it was cold until about 8:00 AM then it slowly warmed up. The ride was smooth, Marty did not leave the motel until about 10:00 AM and caught up to me at about 11:00 AM, I was about 20 miles from Winnemucca by then. She drove to Winnemucca and washed her car and then drove back out to find me, by then I only had about 8 miles left before I would arrive in Winnemucca, Nevada . We then decided to meet at the motel after about an hour. I took, my time and took photos, we found each other at the motel around 1:30 PM. We walked to the convention center to look for tourist information. The tourist information center was closed. Then we walked back to the motel, drove to get dinner, then drove to Water Canyon Recreation Area and found a picnic table to eat our lunch. Then we went to the motel and watched TV and hung out. My left eye was really stinging, might have been sun screen in my eye, it stung all night and was better (not Perfect) in the morning. We went to sleep around 10:00 PM.

We woke up around 8:00 AM and slowly got going. We drove towards Reno, we took one side trip and saw farms in the desert. When we arrived in Reno we stopped at the Subaru dealer to see about getting Marty’s head light fixed. They said it would take 2 hours, so we decided not to wait. Then we drove to Incline Village on the North shore of Lake Tahoe and stopped for lunch. I noticed a bike trail I wanted to ride nearby, so we biked from our lunch spot for about 14 miles along the Tahoe East shore trial. We started by biking on residential street north, then we went back and found the shoreline trail. The shoreline trail was very scenic and went most of the way to Sand Harbor. We were less than a half mile from Sand Harbor when we came to a closed gate and then we cycled back to Marty’s car. The next stop was Cave rock, we hiked most of the way to the top, Marty did not want to go up the last part and I decided not to go. She told me I should go and I think of wish I went. But it really was not that important, we could see mostly everything from our viewpoint. Then we drove to Carson City and got a room at Motel 6. I cycled to get a bulb for Marty’s car from Auto Zone and fixed her headlight. Then we ate dinner and watched TV until late.

California

We took highway 88 and it was a long uphill. Marty was concerned due to the acceleration noise her car was making. I insisted it was due to the altitude. The drive through the mountains was very nice, once we got down from the high mountains Marty’s car was driving normal again. We stopped to eat lunch in Clements, the state park was closed, so we ate at the cemetery. We continued the drive to Salinas and found a motel. Then we meet up with Marty’s sisters Maggie and Louise and Louse’s husband Gene. We had a great Italian dinner at Casa Sorrento, complements to Gene and Louise, I gave Gene a copy of my American Journey book I made for him, he seemed to like it. Then we went back to the motel and watched TV until about midnight.

I was planning on getting up at 6:30 AM and biking until 10:00 AM. Marty’s phone died and I was not tracking the time, I woke up a little after 7:00 AM and did not start cycling until about 7:40 AM. I cycled to Fort Ord and then continued to Toro Park, the park was closed. I then headed back to our motel, we packed up the car and checked out of the motel at 10:50 AM, check out time was 11:00 AM.

Then we drove to Sacramento. Once in our motel I cycled to the end of the trail, past the train museum (old Sacramento) to the end of the road at Fredrick Miller Regional Park. Then I cycled back to the motel and got Marty. We cycled the other direction, towards the city center. We went past a lot of homeless people, some right in the middle of the trail. It seemed uncomfortable to bike through their front yards. On the way back we took the trail on the other side of the river, it was a lot better ride, no homeless camps and then we biked to the rail museum and then back to our motel. We stopped to get ice and I asked Marty if there was a Microwave in the motel and she said yes. I bought stuff for the Microwave and when we got back to the motel, there was no Microwave, so I went back to the store to cook our dinner. Then we ate dinner and watched TV until about 11:00 PM and then we went to sleep.

Friday, September 11, 2020
I woke up at 6:30 AM and was biking by 6:45 AM. I cycled towards the Northern bikeway, but it seemed to dead end quickly. Then I cycled the American River trail and crossed the Guy West Bridge to California State University – Sacramento. Then I decided to bike the other side of the river back to our motel. I ended out going a long ways towards Highway 160 (80 bypass), but found dead end roads and after a while I ended up near where I crossed the river on Guy West bridge, so I went back over the bridge. I wanted to check out the capital and spent too much time lost. Therefore, I went about 15 MPH or more all the way back to near our motel (faster than my normal 10-12 MPH). When I was close I headed to where I though the capital building was, but could not find it, I used my cell phone to find the capital building. Then cycled there and found I had passed it. Then I quickly checked it out and went back to the motel. I told Marty I would be back between 9:30 and 10:00 AM. I was back at the hotel by 9:45 AM and we packed up her car. We left to see Marty’s friend Lyn. We were running early so we got coffee at McDonalds, it took a long time. We were supposed to be at Lynne’s place by 11:00 AM, we arrived a couple minutes late. Then we had lunch with Lynne and started heading north, everyone was warning us about the fires. We drove to Lake Shasta to see about the cavern tours, we arrived too late, so we decided to stay in Redding and go to the cavern the next day. We stayed to Motel 6 and watched TV until about 11:00 PM.

We woke up around 6:30 AM and packed the car. We then got breakfast at McDonalds and drove to Lake Shasta Caverns National Natural Landmark. The gates open at 8:00 AM and the first tour is 9:00 AM. We arrived at the gate at 8:00 AM and there was already cars waiting. We got on the first boat, there was a family of 21 people that also got on the boat, it was a family reunion. Once at the cavern they separated Marty, me and another couple from the family and took us through the caverns as a small group. I was glad they separated us, the family was not doing a great job of wearing their mask to protect against COVID-19. It was also nice being in a small group. The smoke from wild fires was making it hard to see across the lake. After the cavern tour we started the long drive back to Portland. Waves (a map app) wanted to take us over highway 97 through Klamath Falls and then back to Eugene. It would have been a longer way, so we decided to continue up interstate 5. It was very smoking, going through Ashland you could see the destruction of fires on both sides of the interstate, it turns out houses had recently burned down in the area. We continued to Portland and the entire trip had very poor air conditions and thick smoke from all the wild fires. We arrived home around 7:00 PM, watched TV and I went to sleep around 12: 45 AM.

The smoke in Oregon was really bad due to all the wild fires, we went grocery shopping and then I spent time at home working on stuff and this journal.

Monday, September 14, 2020
I went back to work, nothing went smoothly. I ended up using my stationary bike for the first time, I bought it for COVID-19 in case I was ordered to stay inside. I only used it now because I did not want to go out in the smoke filed outdoors. .
