Points of interest:
1. I woke up at 3:00 AM, Marty gave me a ride to the airport and I was at the airport by 3:50 AM.
2. Flight out of Portland left on time at about 6:00 AM.
3. I stayed awake for all my flights so I would be able to sleep when I arrived in Norway after 10:00 PM the next evening
4. Could not check my bags to the final destination from Portland, too many flight changes. They checked my bags to Alta, Norway.
5. At EWR (Newark Liberty International Airport, Newark, New Jersey) they said they could check my bags all the way through. But they did not retag my bags and they still needed to be rechecked in Alta, Norway (I found them at the baggage claim in Alta)
6. My flight left EWR on time at about 6:55 PM.

Accommodations – Stayed awake on Plane to help reduce jet lag (I was arriving in Norway late at night and wanted to be able to sleep in their time zone) (might have dozed off a little)

1. Had to pay for my diet coke on the Norway flights.
2. My bags were supposed to be checked through to final destination, but they ended up in the Alta baggage claim area. I found my luggage at the Alta baggage calim area and had them check them to my final destination (HVG).
3. I found I could have taken a bus from Alta to Honningsvåg. I could not determine that before I left the USA.
4. No Taxis at HVG, found someone from my flight to give me a ride to my hotel.

1. Took a tour to Nordkapp (Northern most point in Europe)
2. Hiked up trail that overlooked Honningsvåg. They were working on the stairs of the trail and the trail was closed to the top. You could only hike about 1/4 of the way up the hill.
3. Walked around at the monument park in Nordkapp.
4. Saw serval reindeer.

Day 5, Friday, August 12, 2022

Location: Alta, Norway to 10 miles before Kautokeino, Norway
Points of interest:
1. Cycled biggest hill of trip, it had a sign saying 8% grade for 6 KM. Not that bad of a hill, I only reached 1400 feet in elevation.
2. The road had good pavement and light traffic. However the shoulder was only about 6 inches wide. Typical roads for the north, the drivers were very polite to cyclist.
3. Camped out, it was cold. I did not bring a sleeping bag. I had a synthetic blanket and wore all my coats and most of my other clothes. I even put on my rain gear.

Accommodations: I camped near the road 10 miles before Kautokeino, Norway.

1. Cold night and lots of Mosquitoes when I go out of my tent about 6:00 AM.
2. Trouble finding food and water in Kautokeino. I did find an open grocery store as I was leaving town.
3. Lots of colorful and large mushrooms in the roadside forest.
4. Great hotel in Enontekiö.
5. Had reindeer burger in Enontekiö.

1. Found great souvenir shops in Sonkamuotka (A town with almost nothing, except two gift shops)
2. Cool closed hotel called Harriniva Hotels & Safaris. Not sure why it was closed. The large hotel land was open to walk around (they had trails).
3. Stayed in campground cabin with Sauna in Muonio.

2. I took photos at the Arctic Circle. For the remainder of this trip I was south of the Arctic Circle. Prior to this point I was north of the Arctic Circle.
3. Found rest stop with free firewood at the picnic table fire rings.
4. Met man at campground who started cycling in Italy and he was headed to Nordkapp.

1. When I reached the Sweden coastal highway, I found I could not cycle on the main highway, E4. The Italian cyclist that I camped near the previous night had told me that. From then on I had trouble navigating my bike route.
2. First rerouting put me on a remote dirt road that lead me back to highway E4.
3. Two of my credit cards did not work and I had to pay cash.
4. Had to camp in a park near homes.
5. It was a rainy night.

2. About 50% of the roads were slow riding on dirt or gravel roads.

4. Slept in lake changing room (for people changing into their swim suit for swimming in the lake)
5. It rained most of the night, I was glad I did not sleep in my tent.

4. Had to register my passport at ICA to buy groceries at the Umeå Max ICA.

4. I hiked most of the loop trail in Norrfällsviken Nature Reserve at the campground.
