create garmin cycling maps

get maps into garmin gps

The following sources and instructions are ways Ted has created Garmin GPS maps that he loaded into his Garmin GPS prior to leaving on a bike trip.

EuroVelo – Do the following (I did not always get the full route, might need to donate to get the complete route):
1. Log onto https://en.eurovelo.com/
2. Select a route from left side.
3. Press the download this route in gpx” button
4. Press “download full route”, if not a choice, “download developed parts” button.  This did not work with routes 12.  However, it worked fine for route 5 and 6.
5. Open the Garmin BaseCamp software
6. Create a list in Basecamp and import the route you downloaded from EuroVelo into the Basecamp list.
7 Connect your GPS to your PC and make sure it is connected to Basecamp (Might take a minutes after connecting the powered Garmin to computer).
6. in Basecamp, select menu “Device” and “send to device”, select your GPS device and upload the EuroVelo gpx track to the device.

Google My Maps
1.
Sign into my maps (My Maps (google.com))
2. Press “Create a new map”
3. Select the “Add Directions”
4. Put in start and stop locations.
5. Select Mode of transportation = bike
6. Name map to help with determining what you are saving.
7. Export google map as a KML (or KMZ) file to read with BaseCamp
8. Open the Garmin BaseCamp software
9 Connect your GPS to your PC and make sure it is connected to Basecamp (Might take a minutes after connecting the powered Garmin to computer your computer)
10. in Basecamp, select menu “Device” and “Send to Device”, select your GPS device and let it upload to that device.
11. If file is too big, compress using BaseCamp (Select data, Select filter, Choose Entire track, Automatic, Save original track and then OK)

OpenCycleMap.org – the OpenStreetMap Cycle Map – Seems like there is a lot of maps here, I just still have not determined how to get them.

Maps.me – I think this is just a way to download detailed maps on location, not really about cycling.
